The SUMMER SOLSTICE occurs each year, when the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky as seen from the North or South Pole respectively.  Depending on the shift of the calendar, the summer solstice occurs between Juen 20 and 22 in the Northern Hemisphere, and between December 20 and 23 each year in the Southern Hemisphere.

Summer solstice is an instant in time but it is also used colloquially like "midsummer" to refer to the day on which it occurs.  Worldwide interpretation of the summer solstice varies among cultures, and many celebrate the occasion with festivals, gatherings, rituals or other celebrations.

The word solstice derives from Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still).  Now you can capture that spirit with Judy Neimeyer's paper-pieced Summer Solstice pattern with this spectacular quilt that finishes at 58" x 58".  Included in the pattern are general and specific directions, all the paper foundations needed to make the quilt and copious illustrations to guide you along the way.
